Vaccination against influenza is very important for preventing infection and severe illness. Since last year, the intranasal live vaccine (FluMist®) has also been introduced. There are various opinions regarding its preventive effectiveness, but we consider injection and intranasal administration to be nearly equivalent. At our clinic, we do not strongly recommend one over the other.
If you are unsure whether to receive the injection or the nasal spray, please refer to the explanation below
Features and Benefits of FluMist®
• It is available for individuals aged 2 years and older up to under 19 years. The cost is 8,000 yen per dose (subsidies may be available depending on the municipality).
• As this vaccine is administered intranasally in both nostrils, there is no pain. Only a single dose is required.
→ For those who dislike injections or prefer to complete vaccination in a single visit, FluMist® may be a suitable choice.

Who Should Not Receive FluMist®
• FluMist® should not be administered to individuals who are immunocompromised, pregnant, or allergic to gelatin.
• After vaccination, some people may experience cold-like symptoms or develop influenza (reported in about 3–4% of cases last year). If there are immunocompromised individuals in close contact, the injectable vaccine is considered more appropriate.
• Caution is also required for those with severe asthma symptoms or a history of anaphylaxis. Please read the FluMist® questionnaire carefully, and consult with a physician if you have any concerns.
